The Flag Institute is the largest vexillological membership organization in the world. It was was formed in 1971 (its birthday is that of England's patron saint, St George: 23 April).

The Flag Institute flag was designed by the first Director, Dr William Crampton, and depicts the Cross of St George on a white V on blue, the international symbol for Vexillology.

The membership consists of three main categories: individuals, the flag trade (manufacturers and dealers) and groups (museums, libraries, resource centres).

All members receive our quarterly magazine Flagmaster and are entitled to attend General Meetings of the Institute, which take place twice a year. All the members resident in the UK can take part in the government of the Institute.

The officers of the Flag Institute are elected by the members. The current officers are:

    President: Robin Ashburner

    Chairman: Cpt Malcolm Farrow RN

    General Secretary: Graham Bartram

    Membership Secretary: Michael Faul

    Treasurer: Simon Bennett

The Flag Institute is a full member of FIAV (Fédération Internationale des Associations Vexillologiques), and will play host to the XIX International Congress of Vexillology in York in July 2001.
