The old South African national flag was adopted on 31 May 1928 and was used until 27 April 1994 when it was replaced by the modern flag. The central emblem shows the flags of Britain, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal.
The South African Navy used the British naval ensign until 1 September 1946. Their ships were differentiated by the South African national flag being used as the jack. In 1946 a separate South African naval ensign was introduced.
