National Flag & Civil Ensign [Ratio 7:10]
The "Hinomaru" has been the national flag since the restoration of the Emperor (the Meiji Restoration) on 3 January 1868.




Naval Ensign & War Flag [Ratio 11:17]
The naval ensign was adopted in 1889 and used until the Japanese surrender at the end of Word War II. It was re-adopted in June 1954 for use by the Japanese Self-Defence Forces. During World War II it was also the flag used by the Japanese army.
