National Flag [Ratio 2:3]
| The national flag was first used in 1948, while negotiations on autonomy were going on with the colonial power, France. The three red stripes represented the three main regions: Annam, Cochin-China and Tonkin. It is very similar to the flag used by the Japanese puppet regime set up in 1945, but that flag had a break in the central line. | |

Flag of the Viêt Cong [Ratio 2:3]
| The National Liberation Front or Viêt Cong was a communist rebel movement set up in 1960. Their flag was based on that of North Viêt Nam. They fought the forces of the South Viêt Nam government and later the Americans until the fall of Saigon in 1975. From 30 April 1975 to 2 July 1976 this was the national flag of South Viêt Nam. On 2 July 1976 the two Viêt Nams united under the communist government of Hanoi and the flag of North Viêt Nam became the flag of all Viêt Nam, which was now called the Socialist Republic of Viêt Nam. | |
