The flag of Taiwan is that of the Republic of China that existed in mainland China before the communists overthrew it. General Chiang Kai-Shek created a government in exile on the island of Taiwan. Because of this history this flag will cause offense to mainland Chinese authorities. When Taiwan competes in IAAF or Olympic events they use a special sports association flag.
